Fraser Island is rich in both Aboriginal and European history:

K’gari

The Butchulla people – the Fraser Island Aboriginal clan – aptly named the island ‘K’gari’ which means ‘paradise’. The Aboriginal history of the island is strong, with evidence of campsites, stone tools and bora rings leading anthropologists to believe Fraser Island was inhabited at least 5000 years ago. The indigenous population once fluctuated between 400 and 3000 inhabitants depending on the seasons and food available. However, by 1904 introduced disease, enslavement, conflict and relocation, none of the original Aboriginal people were left on Fraser Island.Today, the importance of the rich Aboriginal heritage is acknowledged.

Discovery

The first discovery by Europeans dates back to May 1770 when Captain James Cook sailed by. While passing he noticed some Aboriginals standing on a high rock. As the Europeans referred to the native people as “indians” he named the rock ‘Indian Rock’. Nowadays we refer to this place as ‘Indian Head’ - a popular tourist destination.

Destruction

The first settlement of Fraser Island started around 1860 and was purely focussed on timber logging. Logging continued until the 1970s, during which time sand mining became another ‘big business’. Tourism, which started back in the 1930’s on a very tiny scale, also grew bit by bit and started to really take off in the 1970s. Several communities began to develop to support these economic activities. However all settlements on Fraser Island remained very small and never consisted of more than a couple of hundred people.

The War

During WWII a commando unit known as the Z-Force was based on the west coast of Fraser Island. The wreck of the Maheno was used as a target practise object.

Fraser Today

Fraser Island is a World heritage listed site and an internationally famous nature destination. Today we acknowledge the importance of the island’s Aboriginal heritage and no logging, sandmining or other commercial activities take place on - except for an intensive tourism industry. There are still only a couple of hundred permanent residents living on Fraser Island, although the yearly number of visitors is phenomenal.
