Central Station is an old logging depot with campsite, telephone and information hut under some monstrous Bunya Pines in the middle of the island. From the station, be sure to go for a walk down along Wanggoolba Creek – a magnificent stream so clear that it’s hard at first to see the water as is runs across the forest floor!
Chill out at one of the ‘world’s top ten beaches’ and Fraser Island’s most famous lake. You’ll be amazed by the sparkling white sand and crystal clear water.
75 Mile Beach runs along most of the east coast of Fraser Island. While it may not be the best place for swimming due to dangerous currents and plentiful Tiger sharks, it is extremely beautiful. The beach also acts as both a highway and a runway. The hard packed sand below the high tide mark can make for quite smooth driving, but care must be taken with speed; there are many deep wash outs and you can suddenly find yourself driving vertically into one if you're going too fast. Aircraft often land on the beach and if you can afford it, this mode of travel is a great way to see the entire island in a short space of time.
The dazzling white beaches at Lake Birrabeen are formed of sand leached by the rise and fall of the lake waters until all impurities have been removed, leaving pure silica.
Trek across one of the sand blows on Fraser Island to discover for yourself this beautiful lake that is being slowly swallowed up by the sand blow.
Located along 75 Mile Beach, you really can’t miss it! After 30 years of service in Australian waters, the Maheno – a huge cruise vessel – was being towed to Japan as scrap when it hit cyclonic conditions off the coast and was washed ashore on 9th July 1935. The past 70 years of waves and weathering have reduced this once massive vessel to a small rusting hulk.
Indian Head is the highest point along the Eastern beach and the most easterly point of Australia! It’s also the best place on the island to witness tiger sharks, dolphins and manta rays feeding offshore. Indian Head was given its name by Captain Cook when he passed it in the evening of 19th May 1770, for the Aboriginal people he saw assembled there (the term ‘Indian’ was used at that time for the native people of many lands). This is also said to be the site of the biggest of a series of massacres of Aboriginals on Fraser Island between 24th December 1851 and 3rd January 1852 by the ‘Native Police’.
